Continuing Education

SCILL has sponsored a series of basic courses that help adults learn or perfect various skills that are necessary to advance their careers, learn new skills, or help them gain additional certifications. Currently planned is a class on leadership training which has been requested by several companies in the county.

SCILL is able to sponsor most any course that demand may call for in the community. Examples of basic courses provided by SCILL in the past include:

  • Basic work ethics
  • Basic computer applications
  • Residential wiring
  • Computer troubleshooting
  • Using the Internet
  • Beginning and intermediate AutoCAD
  • Real estate continuing education
  • Insurance licensure and continuing education

Adult Literacy

SCILL, in partnership with the Starke County Public Library, assists with adult literacy tutoring. This program provides a second chance for adults to fulfill personal goals for family enrichment, employment opportunities and community involvement. Tutoring is available at the Starke County Public Library in basic literacy skills, including reading, writing and math.

A trained tutor will provide confidential one-to-one tutoring in reading, writing and math skills. To register as a learner in the program, you need to:

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Be able to speak some English
  • Be able to work with your tutor at least one hour per week

As an adult learner, you will:

  • Get free and confidential tutoring in reading, writing and basic computer skills
  • Work one-on-one with a trained tutor
  • Meet at a time and place convenient for both of you

Computer Software Training

SCILL sponsors a series of training classes on different computer software programs, such as Excel, Word, Publisher and QuickBooks, along with an introduction to computers class for those just starting to use a computer. The classes currently take place at Knox High School. The schedule of classes is repeated several times during the year.
